Jessamine is a slave and the daughter of a slave, born in the Silver Street brothel in the sprawling city-state of Jaspertree. She spent most of her life serving the whims of others, mostly the males who came to rent her for a few hours every day. The rest of her time was spent working in secret to help free as many of her fellow slaves as she could. Then, when she was thirty-three years old, a revolution was sparked in Jaspertree and she found herself suddenly free for the first time in her life.

Jess is a decent girl at heart. She is kind and eager to help anyone in trouble, and she is fiercely loyal to anyone who earns her trust. However, years of abuse and being forced to bury her true feelings has left her somewhat bitter and jaded, especially when confronted with anyone richer or more powerful than she is. She also suffers from a constant internal conflict bred of her mixed parentage. As someone who is both predator and prey, Jess feels constantly at odds with herself as she is often faced with wildly conflicting instincts and emotions in any given situation.
