I still remember how she looked in the later years. That was still my mother's face, she still made the same expressions, but her voice had grown hoarse and tired, and the rest of her...
She was a monster. I will not mince words, here. Everyone was respectful to her after she changed. The whole island seemed to hold her in some kind of reverence. Thinking back, though, I guess they always did... After the change, though, I think they were all terrified of her. Too afraid to tell anyone on the mainland perhaps -- I don't know. I found her beautiful, but I suppose most children do find their mothers beautiful. I don't know if anyone else did, or even could have, but they knew to fear her.

They would have been given real reason to fear her if they knew what she did to me.

...and then, one day, she was gone. Just like that.
