Magic sometimes finds its way into people as an innate power; in Syllis' case, she was born with the ability to breathe comfortably under any circumstances. Underwater, buried under eight feet of soil, inside a cavern of toxic sulfur fumes - it doesn't matter. She'll never suffocate. It's not a very flashy ability, but it's hers to keep, and it's kept her alive in her exploration. The extra arms and ears are a side-effect of being born with innate magic - the Instilled, as they're known, always have some kind of obvious physical change to go along with their power, although it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what the power does. It's just that when that much power has been placed in you, it's going to need an outlet.
Syllis came about as a result of rethinking how Tessera's magic system works. She's a blue mage, studying spells that work with wind, water, and weather (a path she chose based on her own power fitting neatly into that category). Although her particular race is based on the mythical jackalope, she has no horns; only the men get those. Instead, she's just a vaguely rabbit-ish humanoid with short white fur. Like most Jacalpans, though, her slight and willowy build belies a surprising turn of speed when she gets going and the ability to leap very long distances. With her magic assisting her, Syllis can soar through the air for miles in a single bound and outrace storms on foot.
