Still Life 2/6/15 (critique requested)

Really proud of dat skull. Chose this for my still life in drawing class to challenge myself and I'm glad I did.

Charcoal with white pastel highlights. This is my first finished piece in charcoal. I'm not too sure what I could have done better, which is a problem because then I don't know what to improve on in the future!

I really enjoy how you did this. Much better than what could I do, haha. Stay glad.

If you're looking for some feedback, I don't see much you should improve on, here. This piece looks very well to me, the shading and the details on the skull as well as the subtle background are what I enjoy the most. I think the anatoy of the skull might be slightly off in some areas though, and I think it is most noticeable with the teeth. But other than that I think you did just great. I admire how you handled the objects and the shading.

      Thanks a lot! :3

Comparing to a photo reference I took before the arrangement was taken down, I can see that my skull did kinda stretch out horizontally as stuff got blended out and redrawn. That's something I can watch out for in the future.

The teeth were a huge pain, I saved them for last and I think I spent an hour on them alone. They're a little long but other than that I don't think I could have done much else with them – there were so many thin, hard lines with subtle shifts in value that getting all of them perfect would have been nearly impossible in charcoal. It's pushing looking flat with the number of lines I have as it is.

I poked around your gallery a bit and picked my favorite! You have such an amazing way with shading. It's stunning.

Still life pictures were always hard for me but you have got them down pat.

Thanks! Shading really came together for me after I discovered blending stumps. I think I used them more than the actual charcoal. |3

Those things are the best things ever. I love me some blendy stumps. XD

Awesome still life! The detail in the skull is great, especially around the nose and eye. You also did a great job on the darkness of the table, it really pushes the other pieces forward and adds a nice contrast!

If you were looking for critique, I think the only thing that looks a little off is the mug under the pitcher doesn't look like it is a circle, but without seeing the original, that might have been the case.

    Keep up the great work!

Thank you! I'm glad you like the skull. It was the only thing in the studio I really wanted to draw anyways. x3

Unfortunately, I noticed after the fact that I'd gone over the bottom edge of my mug a bit while blending the charcoal on the table smooth. The bottle too, and a couple other places. Keeping my edges from moving when going back and doing detail seems to be a problem in general from me. The skull ended up a lot fatter than it was in life, for example (though you can't tell too easily because it's all still in proportion :p).
