encountering the freezing death

Yoshitoki92

In this world lurks many dangers. Some can be avoided and some cannot.
I was travelling to a town somewhere in the northern part of the Kingdom to get some supplies for my herbs and
offer my services to an old granny who was in constant pain. There was nothing ordinary. When people ages they may feel increasing pains in their joints
and limbs. All what I was able to offer was ointment that I made from ants.

I didn't realize how fast the day had come to an end. It was pitch dark. I put on a cloak and headed back home. I noticed it was exceptionally cold during this time of year. The sky was cloudy and dark, the moon glow didn't get much through and there was frost. Even my breath got steamy. I decided to hurry up.

Suddenly my staff pearls started to glow red. It had never happened before so I stopped to investigate. The air got colder and suddenly I heard a long whine sounding moan echoing somewhere far. The air got foggy and I heard a crackling sound. I decided to hide behind a tree. I waited and the sound got closer. My instincts told that a huge danger was approaching and I believe my staff signaled it as well. And then I saw it.

A huge shadowy monster appeared from the distance. It's eyes were plain white spots in it's head and it's mouth wasn't even visible. It looked like a ghost. The ground and air seemed to freeze around it leaving a frosty trail behind it. It rested it's arm on a tree and instantly it froze. I gasp and held my breath, trying to hide my staff so I wouldn't be spotted. The monster stayed in it's spot for a short moment before it continued to move. I heard the ground freezing underneath. When I realized it was gone I sighed out deep and gathered myself for a moment until I decided to take on my wings and fly back home.

At home I saw Tensei enjoying some tea. She saw me being quite pale and obviously frightened. "Dear child, what happened!?"
I took the cloak off and ran into her arms, hugging her tight. "M-Mother! T- th- there is... something outside...!"
I gathered myself in front of the fireplace and told everything. Tensei nodded, held me in her arms and stroked my mane, comforting me.

"Fear not, my dear child." She spoke. "That thing you described cannot get in here. It is dangerous and must be avoided. It seeks weak and lonely souls to eat freezing their bodies whenever it just gets a chance. It is a cursed soul, immortal and destined to wander the world alone. It's sentence is to be unrecognizable and seek comfort only from winter. It must have sensed your magic staff and it's warm glow which is why it moves here. But winter is it's original time to move and night time, not sure why it was during a warm summer. Your staff is made to warn you with reddish glow whenever there is danger near you. I am sorry I didn't tell you about it sooner, dear Yoshi."

I nodded and kept hugging. I was relieved that the house was my safezone from it but I admit it was so scary I was unable to sleep well the first night. I hope nobody got on it's way.
