Couples for a Night by Yonk

Couples for a Night

Yonk

I'm waiting for a brilliant game experience, which is called "Night in the Woods." Eventually, a doodle let to a painting. Here, four of the characters find themselves at lame festivities, are forced to pair off into two heterosexual couples, and are doomed to wear very unfitting clothes.

No, this isn't part of the actual story. To prove it, here are links to the juicy stuff, including a supplemental game that really knows how to set a mood!

Buying their bundle of pins, stickers, and a patch led me to making the doodle of this painting.

here are two things that made me respect the game so much more:

also I have to show this off: nitw reblogged my sketchbook drawing :D it made me feel surprisingly validated as an artist
like, apparently my doodle was true to their game

I listened to that podcast they did a while back and that was really like, inspiring I guess, because it's a dream of mine to make a game like that. And these guys got it going on.

So I got the zine and stuff, no regrets ^-^
And that's super cool! Congrats \o/
I oughta draw more nitw, it's got style.

yeah their Tumblr reblogs of fanart always get me in an art mood

and wait-- what zine? I feel like I missed that completely
btw your avatar is really fun to look at

The 50 dollar backer level included a special edition 'zine with comics by various artists. Looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/kAKsMOX.png

It's really great, basically a collection of vignettes about life in Possum Springs. You can really feel the characters and their world come through. About 20 pages, black & white.

and thanks, haha, it was fun to make. I cropped it out of one of my dumb lil' comics

              AH GIF COMIC
I always wanted to make a comic with GIFs in it
For years I've had millions of amazing GIF comic ideas
I need to know anything about making what you did! Like, I have learned 0

that's one pretty picture! since you spent $50, then I'm guessing the "EARLY ACCESS TO NIGHT IN THE WOODS ANIMATED SHORTS" is your thing too! I just read that they're sold out of $1000 character creations-- that surprises me! dayyymn (then again, I don't have a job yet so maybe that's why)
I hope my NITW messages aren't bothering you--- this is the only other way I cant vent about the project :9 did you use the patch that came in the bundle?

              • Link

It's not that hard actually! Although my tools are really not the most efficient for animating, so it's probably more effort than it needs to be. But basically, I draw the comic like normal and then make a few layers on top for each frame of the moving parts so they're easy to manipulate. Then, save a copy of each frame as a .gif file and string em' together with Microsoft Gif Animator or VirtualDub or whatever you prefer. If you want like, a really detailed description then I can send you a PM or something but that's pretty much all there is to it.

And I don't mind! I don't get to chat about it too much, most of my friends aren't as excited as me :P
Anyway, yep, I'll get to see the shorts too which is neat. They actually didn't have the patches in the original backer packs - just a pin for each of the characters and a Mae sticker, which I've prominently displayed on my laptop cover. The patch looks super rad though!

I'm hoping to recover a Gregg-esque jacket to put that patch onto! Oh and I get the process you did, now—
I just haven't been able to find a convenient software

                  • Link

well, my two are MS Gif Animator which is ancient but works alright for stuff with <10 frames, or VirtualDub which is for editing video but you can load like, sequentially numbered PNG files and output the whole thing as a .gif although it's slightly more complicated. Both are free.

I believe The GIMP can export animated gif's from layers too but I wouldn't wish that UI on anybody. There are probably other speciality softwares I'm not aware of that do the job as well or better, animating isn't exactly my domain of expertise per se.
