How to Improve at Anything in Less Than 2 Hours

YaoiMeowmaster

Okay, I’ll be honest here, this scares even me. I didn’t record the time on each picture exactly, but I can tell you that the whole thing took me less than 2 hours, from start to finish.

I did this by using the so called “shrimp method”. The steps are as follows.

  1. Sketch what you want to learn to draw better from memory

  2. Get some official pictures (since I did something that wasn’t exactly real in the first place, I settled for official art so that I don’t get restricted by copying someone’s artstyle and copying their mistakes) and “trace”.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: this step is crucial, as you can by my images, I didn’t just do a line over the lineart. Pretend that you are making that image from scratch. For example, do the guidelines and then do the details. Basic shapes to more complex. This is so that you understand form rather than line.

3. Copy a picture. Use one of your reference photos and try to duplicate the image beside it. This is not the same as tracing, and this is simply more eye training.

  1. Draw an original picture. Using your reference pictures, try to draw your subject doing something different than what they were doing in the reference.

  2. Draw it from memory. All of the information that you missed the first time should be there. Compare it to the first image for a well needed ego boost.

To be honest, I didn’t really spend too much time on the first sketch in the first place, but I am really pleased with the end result anyway.
