It sounds interesting for me, but I think there is not the only reason why we do so.
I always decide the direction by which matches the theme that I draw. In short, it's by an atmosphere. :)

I'm kinda surprised most Japanese transformation artists always draw transformation sequences like these from left to right, just like western artists, even if they draw manga from right to left.
