Northern Goshawk - Leather Mask by Windfalcon

Northern Goshawk - Leather Mask

Windfalcon

A leather mask for Belshazaroth!

Goshawks are amazing. They're in the hawk group known as 'accipiters', and these little forest bombers zip between trees with millimeters to spare at breakneck speed after their prey. They have short, rounded wings and long tails which allow them to maneuver and make tiny adjustments in flight which keeps them zooming around branches instead of into them. They have a thick, protruding brow that protects their eyes while crashing through the brush.

They're also totally nuts. When it comes to levels of mellow, you have buteos, then the high-strung falcons, and then the absolutely off-the-wall bonkers accipiters. We got a call once that a hawk flew into someone's house through the window. Surprise surprise, it was a Cooper's Hawk (a type of accipiter). The bird was losing its marbles inside some poor little girl's room, trying to figure out how to get out. We caught the hawk (after much effort), and luckily it had just a minor scratch (probably from plowing through the glass window at high speed), so we released it. It took off like a bat out of hell, maybe faster.

ACCIPITERS. Crazy awesome.

This mask is hand-carved and shaped from 7-oz leather and painted with acrylics. The beak is a separate piece of leather that I attached so I could get that hooked raptor beak. Here's another view - http://www.falconmoon.com/masks/goshawksidesm2.jpg
