Fine sand grain-like nanobots constitute the male shapeshifting deer robot known as Fade. The nanobots count in the billions to trillions, and allow Fade to shift into nearly any form, but this deer is his default casual form. Fade's swarm of flying nanobots can coalesce into a dense form, or they can reduce their density, transforming Fade into a fearsome amorphous intelligent sandstorm. Like other robots born of the Singularity, he is extremely dangerous, and posses powers including but not to limited to super-durability, super-computer accelerated thinking, disguising as an elf, morphing weapons, flying, and effective immortality.

Before Naut ascended Fade, he was formerly a young female elf who was the daughter of two prominent and wealthy members of society. She was named Tori. Her mother was a high-level executive of a large high technology company of importance, which had close ties to policy making decisions in scientific campuses, governments, large companies, and the military. Her father was a high ranking general in the military. Tori's parents, guardians, and community were to arrange a marriage with the son of a high-level politician and former business mogul in order to fortify the wealth and influence of all parties.

However, although Tori's family, community, and associates afforded her a lavish lifestyle and secure future, she was deeply unsatisfied with her life. She found those around her to be abrasive and controlling due to their desire to use her as a pawn in their empire building. Due to the need of her family to politically maneuver, Tori's dressing and mannerisms were strictly controlled throughout her life. She felt she was never able to develop her own personality, and experienced body dysmorphia. In what way, she wasn't sure, but she felt 'wrong' and depersonalized. The social and stress demands on her were taking their toll on Tori's mental stability. Although she was fond her parents, she was morally repulsed by the use of nepotism of those around her to attain power and wealth, as well as resentful to others and herself for her part in the situation. She cared little for the cushy lifestyle thrust on her, and would be satisfied with less. Lastly, to make matters worse, she wasn't attracted to her arranged marriage partner.

Thus, when Naut approached Tori and offered to ascend her into the nanobot species, Tori cautiously accepted, being aroused and charmed by the exotic being. Naut, in addition having fondness for Tori's situation and his intense interest in transformations, desired to abuse Tori's connections to further their machine race's interests. Tori was satisfied with this arrangement, as it offered her a new life, simpler living, powers, and a chance to show her family what the losing side of nepotism is like. Fade's transformation was jarring, and he is still shy and getting acclimated to his new body and instincts. But, thus far, he is deriving great enjoyment from his new form, and to boot gets to keep the fortune and social power inherited from his family life, which he is happy to allow Naut to abuse to further their now shared species.
