Ankur Lizardman by Viergacht

Ankur Lizardman

Viergacht

A lizardman for the Ankur RPG bestiary! Between power outages, corrupted files, and a staph-infected spider bite, this guy took FOREVER to finish - but I think he turned out well.

I did a couple sketches of different ideas, but I pretty much knew exactly what I wanted it to look like from the get-go. One of the pictures Chris sent me for inspiration was a still of the aliens from Laserblast, who look a bit like bipedal, shell-less tortoises. They definitely aren't your typical awesomebro muscley raptor-warrior type saurians; instead, they've got a distinct goofy charm. I wanted this lizardman to be sort of awkward, clunky, tail-dragging and ponderous but powerful, like retro dinosaurs. He's based on Pachychephalosaurus, a dinosaur with a massively thickened skull that gives it an entirely deceptive eggheaded appearance, a lot of knobbly marine iguana DNA in the face, and mad, glassy little lizard eyes that have nothing human in them. The coloration was inspired by the savanna monitor (I had one as a pet, years ago).

Dinofans might recognize the blade on his polearm as a fragment of Carcharodontosaurus (a local giant carnosaur) jaw.

This is a really great character design! More specifically it's a very plausible looking design. My disbelief has been thoroughly suspended....... It's wonderful to see a pachychephalosaurus inspired anthro, we could do with some more of the odder ornithischians. Toothy carnosaurs and sickle clawed raptor character do get a bit tedious after a while......
