Dream Bestiary #10: The Machine

UlteriorMachinations

Throughout my twenty-three years of existence, I've had countless vivid dreams, many of which manifest some seriously twisted, surreal landscapes, characters, and creatures. I didn't even know dream journaling was a thing until a couple years ago when I ran across several databases online. Now I'm not one who really subscribes to the idea that dreams have any mystical qualities whatsoever, but I consider what my brain pieces together while I sleep to be one of the most raw forms of creativity I can muster. So I thought that making a detailed illustrated bestiary of dream creatures was a worthwhile endeavor. The pleasant-looking fellow above is one of the seventy-seven I've recorded so far.

*Dream Creature #10: The Machine
(This was actually what it was referred to as in the dream.)

A biomechanical hive mind whose "body" pervaded an entire building, possibly an entire planet. Its central core appeared as three fused vaguely human faces with lifeless eyes and deformed, grinning mouths. It's vital components - which looked like a mass of fiber optics cables - were kept safe in a chamber within the bowels of the central core. According to dream narrative, the Machine was a ruthless eater of worlds responsible for the destruction of countless galaxies and it had set its sights on ours. After infiltrating the building in which the central core dwelled, the dream version of me mortally wounded it by detonating a grenade inside of its guts.

I actually had some trouble putting this guy on paper; for some reason I just couldn't get the faces right. Then a couple weeks back I was browsing music videos on Youtube and ran across this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t83ODGv0E90
The spooky cyborg skeleton around 2:20, is what finally kicked off my inspiration and within a couple hours I managed to sketch The Machine. This is the closest I could get to replicating exactly what I saw in the dream. Holy shit, I am so happy with how it turned out!

The clip is from the pilot epsiode of Cyber City Oedo 808. If you're interested, do yourself a favor and watch the english sub instead of the dub. It's 1972897% better.

Art and creature belong to me. Please don't steal. Don't be THAT guy.
