First, I'm not an artist, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt, I don't know the technical art-vocab for what should and shouldn't be. (but I'm a big TLK fan so maybe that helps?)
Original seemed very basic, he almost looks teenage in that one.
2009 had a nice vibrant color to it, reminds me a lot of Tuke's style (awesome artist, I think she's on here now but mainly FA/IB, worth checking out).This one I like, to be honest. Grass seems flat, but in a style I've seen before in "great art" so I'd be hesitant to call it "boring" lest I knock the masters. As for Simba, he's got an awesome color scheme, and I think the perspective trick with the front left paw goes a long way to dissipating the "flatness" you're worried about.
All in all, I'd call it a win :-D and welcome here!

I think the grass is what's throwing it off the most to me, really. Simba's pretty vibrant in comparison, then the grass is so. Blah. Lol. Maybe something to play with in the future. Scenery has never been my forte but that's all the more reason to try more, I think.

Maybe that could be considered a foil though? Deliberately flatten grass just to "show off in comparison" the feature of the pic that people's eyes are supposed to be drawn to? Eh, just a thought, and yep something to think about :)
