In the pack he's in, the tattoo on his face is a mark of status. He led it as its alpha at one point, but my character overthrew him in a secret coup. It wasn't chewed off for the sake of appearances so Kol's supporters wouldn't riot, but I doubt it's something he's proud to wear nowadays.
