Don't Fall (+story)

"The bridge, the bridge is out!" yelled Red, who was scouting ahead in front of me due to his much more lightweight build.

We had been on quite the adventure so far, delving deep into the rumored Cave of Desolation. Allegedly, it was once the lair of a great red dragon, loaded with treasure and magical goods. Of course, like any popular adventuring location, the place was picked bare of anything useful.

It was also full of traps, which was actually the reason we were here to begin with. A gnome tinkerer had sent us here to look for traps and parts, because it's one of the few things that wouldn't normally be seen as loot. Why anyone would want a bunch of old cogs and gears and servos baffled me, when they could have just bought new ones. Though the gems in some of the workings were most definitely valuable, if dangerous to get to.

We'd collected over thirty traps, each quite unique in their designs. Fortunately, we were both mechanically inclined and able to locate them before accidentally setting them off.

But this time, it looked like we just set one off. And now the entire segment of the long bridge suspended by chains was tipping forward dangerously. It was obvious he wasn't going to make the steep jump up to the next part of the bridge.

The rocks below would be a quite difficult and painful jump. The fact that magma was boiling down there was the biggest danger. I was a black dragon, not a red one, so I didn't have that kind of innate fire resistance. And despite being made of the newest and most advanced materials, neither was Red. Using my natural draconic powers of... just plowing through whatever it was in my way, wasn't going to fly, here.

Fly. I thought I might have an idea. I jumped... jumped down and struggled to flap over to the opposite end of the platform that Red was on. Flying wasn't my strong point, in fact I could really only use my wings to manage a little hop. Finally, Red was able to jump over to the next part of the bridge, which seemed to be strong enough to support him.

But now, it was my turn to get over. I was exhausted and my wings had given out, after a few seconds of flight, all while losing altitude. I also had a long scary drop into boiling lava to look forward to myself.

But I managed, kicking and flailing and flapping my wings like mad, I was finally able to get my fat gut and immense rump over the edge of the section of bridge, scooting up toward the middle to try to balance it. I stopped to catch my breath. I was going to have to make one more jump.

I scooted forward, as far as I could move without causing the bridge to lean forward. Fortunately for me, my center of gravity was quite far back there, my tail even hanging off the unstable platform. I jumped. I jumped and I began flapping my wings, reaching desperately for the bridge that would take me out of this place. The chains fixing the bridge creaked and groaned, just as though they were going to give way yet again, but this time due to my incredible weight. Fortunately, Red had gotten to more stable footing, climbing up the steep path to the mouth of the cave. I grabbed on and pulled, and I pulled, and I sloshed and kicked and struggled, finally getting my gut onto the bridge. To most it would have looked quite inelegant, but it was actually a really fearsome display of physical prowess.

With better footing, I was able to simply roll along the way to the entrance. Red was practically running trying to keep up with me, who ever said I couldn't move quickly. When we did both make it to the entrance, I sort of just flopped down, stretching ouy my huge paws, and letting Red rest on my rather plump sides. That was quite the adventure, and I was going to need a night's rest before I was ready to do anything else even half this physical.

"Wow, that was actually pretty scary," I said.

Red nodded, "That was intense. I'm just glad we made it out in one piece. I need a vacation."

It wasn't long before we were out on another adventure anyway.
