Buddy was sold into slavery by his own family, I suppose in his early teens. Slave trading is unfortunately a very widespread thing in Hell. He eventually ended up as a pit fighter and somehow manages to not die despite the fact that he's like five foot tall and actively picks fights all the time.

Swanda was an involuntary participant in a science experiment because she (or rather her tail) is a rare demon species with excellent regenerative abilities. How do you collect data on that sorta thing? Amputate limbs and watch them grow back over and over again. She's somewhat of a feral child having not been treated as an intelligent creature for a substantial period of her childhood.
