Look! It’s your old friend from childhood, Grant! He was just a classmate through your early years until late-elementary school when you grew closer to him, becoming a friend. You know he’s had a very hard life at home, and his grandeurs of becoming a Pokémon breeder — a “PokéDad”, as his younger self called it — earned him a lot of ridicule from classmates all through middle school. Why breed when you can just train? Fighting is cooler, anyways. He probably wasn’t your best friend, but you were certainly his. But it seemed like he disappeared off the face of the world after high school graduation. Last you heard, he was headed off to Johto.

But! Now he’s back after all these years. Presumably because his old family had already moved out of town. He’s definitely put on some weight, but has a good, full beard and mustache going on. Did he dye his hair that purplish-red color, though? You thought it was always a dark brown.

Anyways, he’s moving back, but he needs a place to stay for up to a week. He has a job and a place lined up so he won’t mooch off of you for long. But, for as long as you’ve known him, he’s been honest and polite and trustworthy. So, why not? What’s the worst — or best — thing that could happen?

So, yeah, if this guy looks familiar, he's a re-reboot of an old character of mine.
