The design for these was largely based on an enemy type from the 2002 Xbox videogame, Otogi: Myth Of Demons, which is a super awesome hack and slash platformer with great art direction and an amazing soundtrack. It's become a favorite of mine. They couldn't turn you to stone in game, but they could breathe nasty fireballs, and charge at you.
