It took a while to get this properly done. The character I took three snapshots of, posed, against a red/green/blue background (one each). I then filtered them into layers in Gimp, removing the backgrounds via Color -> Alpha, adjusted the Alpha down to about 50-66.6%, and then ran Levels on the Alpha channel to solidify the foreground image. Rest is known Gimp techniques.
