The Tail End of Summer - Chapter 9 by starbornkit

The morning came by a little earlier than what everyone's used to, its glare slipping through the tent and signaling the beginning of another fresh day. Waking up anywhere other than your own home has always been a weird feeling.

Umbra appears to be the first one to open her eyes, but she's just been woken up by some rather loud purring. She's quick to assume her partner, right next to her, is to blame.

"Claire? You up already?" she whispers, petting her hair, but the feline looks like she's just starting to wake up.

"Eh? No, I was sleeping", she mumbles as she stretches and turns to bring herself out of a deep slumber. Soon enough, she hears the purring, too. "Hey, who's making all that noise...?"

With Claire waking up just now, all eyes turn to the other pair of creatures that are still sound asleep in the tent, and they realize the noise they heard was actually coming from Ollie. He's keeping Luke close with a tight hug, his tail swiveling under the covers and his face buried in the coyote's chest. Luke, meanwhile, is still conked out, and considering the work he put into carrying everything yesterday, it'll be a while until he wakes up again.

It's a surprising sight, but one that wasn't completely unexpected. Ollie takes his face away from Luke for a quick moment. He notices Claire and Umbra staring at him, looking increasingly rosy, and he flashes a smile about as bright as the morning sun. Of course, he turns back to Luke right away, nestling against him and falling back to sleep. Needless to say, they seem to have gotten along pretty well as of late.

This morning is off to a good start, and though it's now harder than ever to leave the warmth of their partners and start the day, the group bring themselves to do just that. There won't be any obstacles on the trail ahead until they reach the river, which should be even more interesting now than it was yesterday.

And this is the one where I went the opposite of ham. Very short, but I had to get the scene outta my head before I forgot it.
