:O The evillest of villains in the Redwall series always seem to be told right off by slave-keeping. At first, Urgan Nagru and Silvamord are generally not thought of but in fact they are guilty of such a thing in the extreme. Everyone forgets the Dirgecallers! Two female ermine (just stoats, but I'm not sure Jacques was let in on the fact the two names are for the same creature before he included some in the series) who were raised caged, never loved and never allowed freedom until they'd been starved and tormented into speechless killing machines similar to Gloomer. Despite their mental shortcomings they were portrayed as being supremely dangerous, probably due to being trained to the peak of musteline performance which would make each of them as skilled as any two of the main weasel, stoat or ferret villains on their own. And there's two of 'em.

More so than any common state of enslavement in the series, this kind of enslavement really speaks to the kind of evil their masters possess--Queen Tsarmina had Gloomer, the two arctic fox conquerors had these two. I can't recall any more in which this type of captive existed, maybe Malkariss and the Wearet counts? Anyways, it's rare and this is the only case in which it was ordinary-sized and average-statured members of any species turning out this way. Also the only female characters to ever be portrayed this way, to my knowledge. I wanted to portray the scarcest hints of the two having personhood while still being... um. Absolutely made into monsters. D:
