Climate: Desert

Temperament: Mellow, laid back, curious, tolerant. Gets along well with other pets and multiple family members, but can be overprotective of its ‘family’ towards outsiders. Tend to be very vocal in the early hours.

Function: Companion, show animal

Difficulty: Beginner

  • In the wild they mate for life, and so are often seen in pairs. Multiple males can live together so long as there are no females, or else they will squabble over her constantly even after she chooses one of them. Females are not so tolerant and multiple females are strongly advised against. Females tend to be more territorial than males, due to their strong maternal instincts, and can get aggressive. Nesting pairs are recommended to be isolated until their young are of age.
  • Used to hot days and cool nights, they can be kept in slightly cooler climates, but they flourish best in warmer ones.
  • They are content to sleep most of the day away, and require little exercise. Larger spaces are recommended due to their size, but they can be kept in spaces as small as apartments with few problems.
  • Intelligence is not their strong point, but they are curious and will get into cupboards and closets if not properly proofed against them. Not a pet to have if you have valuables you do not want broken.
  • Flashy color morphs are popular among the wealthy, and breeders are constantly catering to them. Shows are quite the events, and definitely something to see.
