The Yalna, often referred to as the “soul sharers” are a contrasting species of both light and darkness, though few outsiders ever see the light sides counterparts, sometimes called simply “Dark Yalna”.

Though each Yalna and Dark Yalna shares a soul they can go their entire lives without ever meeting one another. In fact, that is the most likely outcome as the two do not often see eye to eye or enjoy the same environments. There is also a considerable risk involved, as when one half of a soul sharing pair dies, their potential life energy goes to the remaining Yalna. This manifests itself as a general improvement to all aspects of the Yalna’s physical and mental abilities and can sometimes lead to the unlocking of a hidden ability which is usually psychic in nature. The potential gain from the murder of their other half has led to a heavy distrust between the two. They may meet however, on the rare occasion when a light and dark Yalna is born to parents of the opposing type. The soul sharers agreed long ago that their leaders would convene once per year to discus important matters that could affect them all and at these meetings the children are exchanged.

All Yalna are at home with nature, just different aspects of it; the light enjoying rolling plains and bright forests and the dark preferring caves and swampland which over the generations has led to the loss of most their fur and the development of a tougher skin layer.

Dark Yalna, unlike their counterparts, do not build permanent settlements but rather tend to be nomadic, following their favourite food sources and other unknown impulses.

When it comes to food, the Yalna are also split; though both are omnivores, the light tends to eat almost entirely vegetation, though some have been known to fish, whereas the dark are primarily meat eaters, resorting to vegetation only in extreme circumstances.

One of the most distinguishing features of both types of Yalna are their horns, and this is another area that shows their shared soul. The Dark Yalna have hard bonelike horns but unlike the spikes that adorn their backs and tails they are almost never used in combat due to the fact that they are hollow and comparatively brittle. The hollow shape that is within these horns is an exact match of the opposing light Yalna’s fleshy horns and is one of the few ways a none Yalna can guess at which two might be a pair who share a soul.
