Oh! I use Aseprite, it's like $15 and a permanent license. It's a great all-in-one tool for pixel art stuff.
I don't have a specific species I enjoy the most, usually I just like seeing someone's passion through what they make.
The timing varies, depending on what the animation requires of me in terms of work, and what I've got goin' on irl. Typically this style takes me a couple days (1-2), but only because the animation itself is so simple and mostly cleanup for the parts I rotate - and that's on a good day.
