This is Alwyn, my druid for a sci-fi D&D 5e campaign!

His family lived in a colony in another planet, until the fey came by and snatched up a bunch of colonists including Alwyn. He was brought in the Fey Wilds where he was nothing more than their plaything to pull pranks and be transformed into any animal as they feel like. By the time the fey were done with him and dumped him out into the real world on a marooned planet, he had very little humanity left in him as he wandered the world as a simple animal.

Luckily for him, a former pirate gnoll named Ulysses was marooned on the same planet and knew how to interact with animals. When Ulyssess discovered that an animal he encountered turned out to be formally human, he helped him regain his humanity and eventually Alwyn was back to being himself! Arguably. He had newfound primal magic that very well made him a druid, and some of the feys' mischievous personality rubbed off him on him.
