Noise is generated for a given size, gradient is multiplied to the noise, and levels are adjusted. In this example the white area is land, but it can easily be switched. The pictures are representations of numerical data. This process can be mimicked in Photoshop. Any of the stages can be slightly altered to create different terrain.
