Kid Meredith and his Mother. She doesn’t have a name. I mean of course she has a name, in-character, but I really don’t know what it is.

(I never thought up a name for her… or for Meredith’s Father for that matter. Usually when I talk about them, I use Meredith’s point of view, and he refers to them as Mother and Father, so their names were never important)

Battle-Mage and veteran of the First War, she found the love of her life on a battle-field. They couldn’t stand each other at first - he was warm and sociable and got along with people and found her too cold and snobbish, and she was aloof and didn’t easily warm up to people, and found him boorish and annoying. I like to imagine they had their own adventures and finally learned to trust and respect each other and fell in love. They moved away from the war and decided to raise a family away from it all, trying to live as peacefully as possible. And for a moment it was possible. She became a teacher and he became a guardsman.

When their son was around four, her husband was killed in action. He was out of duty but decided to try and stop a burglar from escaping, and got his throat slit for his troubles. The town priest couldn’t save is life. and on that moment her and her son’s lives were changed forever.

Bitter to the Light for abandoning her, her husband and her son, she became bitter and reclusive. She’d been always distant, but her husband could always bring her out of her shell and now he was gone, so she became practically a hermit. She became over-bearing and over-protective to her son, Meredith, while simultaneously leaving him feeling abandoned and suffocated. She prevented him from having friends, but also failed to support or encourage him, and was emotionally distant and abusive.

He was home schooled by his mother, and had absolutely no friends as a child; his mother was worried something bad would happen to him if he would do anything “dangerous” normal children are allowed to do, so when he managed to get a permission to go out and meet other kids, he usually was not allowed to participate in any kind of play, and kids being unthoughtful and unintentionally cruel rarely bothered with him. His only consolation were the cats they had.

Meredith was finally “released” from his Mother’s grasp when she died after Cataclysm had hit (she did not die FROM the Cataclysm, but that probably didn’t help her health) and he committed a suicide, only to be resurrected as part of the Forsaken.

As the result of his upbringing Meredith is extremely shy and reluctant to meet new people, eve in undeath. Because his Mother told him early on there was no point in worshipping or trusting the Light, he is also has no real faith or trust in the Light.
