The Remington 1858 was a rather successful percussion revolver design which saw service during the American Civil War and was a popular sidearm among those persons traveling the American West after the war. As with other percussion revolvers of the era, the growing popularity of metallic cartridge arms saw many examples of the Remington revolver being converted to cartridge-firing arms.
