Needing a large number of firearms to equip their large army, the Chinese military and government not only manufactured their own weapons but also converted a number of older weapons to new cartridges. One such example was the conversion of WWII-era Japanese Arisaka rifles to 7.62x39mm. Despite the conversions utilizing SKS barrels, there was a fair bit of variation in the style of conversion ranging from rifles which retained the lines of the orginal Arisaka to those such as the one illustrated which retains the SKS sights, bayonet, and bayonet lug.
