Death at the Village Gate by Sigma

Death at the Village Gate

Sigma

More old shit. I completed this last year. However the concept for this picture is older than that.

When I was 12, I went to Greece. There was this village where my family roots came from called Αράχοβα. It was a very small village on a mountain with super steep roads and hills. The houses were legit, on the edge of this mountain. It was very quiet, old fashioned, small, and beautiful. The house we stayed at was, I believe, my late great grandfather's house. Like the other houses it was built on the edge of the mountain (if you weren't careful you could easily trip off the edge and fall to your death, I'm not kidding). It had a great view of the other side and the river that flowed between the mountain.

As beautiful and peaceful it was I became.... very depressed. Suicidal even. And I honestly don't know why.

But then we walked down the steep road down the village to visit a late relative's house. It had a beautiful garden. Behind the garden was a huge wall to separate the neighbor's garden/house from this house (and also the neighbor's house was on a higher elevation). Pumpkins grew on top of the wall. But what got my attention weren't the pumpkins- they were the vines and flowers that engulfed the entire wall.

They were gorgeous, lavender flowers. Small too, and a lot grew on one vine in a bunch. However, the flowers were starting to come to their end of the cycle, since summer was almost over.

The dead flowers were the most eerie things I've ever seen.

Because when they died, their shriveled petals looked like little skulls.

And honestly, that was the one memory from Greece which sticks to me to this day....
Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the names of these flowers. If there are any botanists here, I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me what their names are!

Done with gouache, Prismacolor markers and coloring pencils, Copic markers, and Pigma colored pens.
