Raleigh being a creepy asshole. I always had the idea that vampirism in the OBNM universe not only induced a need to drink blood, but also made the victim an obligate carnivore. Vampires can, and often do, eat other food types, such as grain and vegetables, but meat has pretty much become a non-optional part of their diet. They can also eat raw meat with little to no problem (although they will often still cook their meat to save face in normal society).

Also, while vampires still retain their human intelligence and act mostly human, they do develop behavioral quirks that are eerily reminiscent of predatory animals (namely cats).
