Alacer Is No Longer An Actor

Shrineheart

An illustration of a character, Alacer, that I have been using in a Minecraft roleplay with 1nkweaver. I did this piece for BaryonSweep's Mega Contest of Villainy.

Alacer is a pumpkinhead. Pumpkinheads, as used in this entry, are a race created for the Minecraft universe by 1nkweaver.

Pumpkinheads are a forum of artificial life, golems so to speak made of pumpkins, wood, hay and clothing. They were created many years ago by a Lich which had invaded the Overworld from the Twilight Forest Realm. Pumpkinheads served the Lich dutifully as servants and warriors for many years. Over time and observation, they developed awareness of their plight as servants bound to an undead king. Rebellion came and the Lich was overthrown. The local villagers were forced to flee from their homes as the pumpkinheads claimed the lands for themselves.

Alacer is one of the pumpkinheads grown after the overthrow of the Lich during a time of peace. He was grown by a pumpkinhead farmer named Krauss and, as a sapling, quickly accustomed himself to the acting trade.
His Mentor, Formus, and other actors knew Alacer well as a mischievous scamp who was often doing things a bit too dangerous for his skill level. He had a great love of both fire and heights and a desire to show off his skills.
Among pumpkinhead actors, fire based performances are considered to be both holy and distinguished. One must be able to be trusted to handle flames without injury to self or audience particularly when one is made of wood.
Alacer strove to be good enough for such performances but his reputation regarding safety preceded him. He was often turned down.
Thanks to a fellow actor he landed a part in a well known stage performance. Eager to please, he worked his routine to the best of his ability.
The show, however, was never to be completed. The villagers that had been run from their lands returned in full force, overtaking the village with the most dangerous weapon they could use. The village was set alight.
Alacer fled the Actor's House, looking for fellow apprentice, Igni. He was quickly cornered by a villager with an ax. Another actor, Sibilus, spotted him and ran to his aid. She attacked the villager brutally with pair of stone poi, telling him to flee just before being cut down by another villager.
In an act of desperation he grabbed the poi from his fallen comrade, wielding them as he had seen her wield them. His results, however, were far more effective.
He fought with various intruders until dawn but his efforts were in vain. Their walled village was ashes and embers and his kin were all slain.
He stumbled from the fields, once nurseries, now graveyards, to the river where he washed the blood and ash from himself and his weapons.
Alacer was no longer an actor.

He took to the roads and for every villager he met he left a body in his wake. He was haunted by the memory of his people and their loss. The faces of his friends, mentor, and savior were always in the forefront of his mind. The killing that had begun in a moment of fear continued now out of need for a closure that would never come.
Alacer knew he could never take on a village alone, he was only one pumpkinhead after all and would be easily overwhelmed. He had other ways of doing harm, however. Villagers came to stay close to home for to venture too far into the woods or meadows was to call on the wrath of the pumpkin man. He would catch them alone and unaware and with one swing of his poi, bring their life to an end. He poisoned wells, lured children away, set homes ablaze...
He didn't understand the reasons for the villager's attack. As a sapling at the time, still learning, he did not yet know that his kind had been responsible for taking the land.
Though, in the wake of the brutality, it hardly would have mattered.
If a traveler is careful they might catch a glimpse of him roaming through a field. A green and yellow pumpkin with a flame alight inside, bobbing above lean frame of wood and vine. All are wary of coming too close, however, for he is deadly with his weapons and more than inclined to use them.
