One might not think it at first, at least when it comes to Crystal, but the two do have a good bit of experience doing science of all kinds, be it mundane, lewd or even mad science, as can be demonstrated here, where it miiiight be somewhere between the second and third of those three options.

As for why they seem to be experimenting on the fly? Well, with their capacity to bypass death in some regards, any bad results usually end up just being an inconvenience rather than a disaster, and still nets potential interesting observations too.
They have separate spaces though for experiments that can become that dangerous, locations like depicted here are more the sort that they do more small-scale science, like experimenting with making different sorts of tentacles~
