Chelsea, Pirate Radio DJ by safyia

Chelsea, Pirate Radio DJ

safyia

it all started with her father's HAM radio. She could still remember the many hours they spent together talking to strangers and the ether. When he died, that old HAM radio was the only thing she wanted to take back to the dorms with her. With her bereavement approved, Chelsea found herself with way too much free time, and nothing but a load of pent up emotions and frustrations to keep her company. She started off playing with it; using it like a standard radio looking for her favorite campus stations. She noticed there were a lot of open frequencies she noticed as she switched through, and was just passing a particularly strong one when she got the call. Her best friend was in the hospital. The campus mugger had struck again. The sound of her neighbors banging against the ceiling could be heard throughout her apartment as Chelsea paced the floors, but she paid it no heed.

How could this be happening??! How could campus security act as if it's not a problem?? This is the 5th incident this month!

Something had to be done. Chelsea's eyes flitted distractedly across the room as she paced, growing even angrier as she realized she had begun to chew her nails. The young lady in the room below stood red faced, her cell phone at the ready staring at her ceiling when the pacing finally stopped. Chelsea sat, staring blankly at first at the machine on the table before her. She knew what she had to do; no one else was doing anything, it had to be her.

So yeah, it all started with her father's HAM radio. But it won't end with her. The movement has been going strong for two years' now. If the school won't do anything, then the students will. Every night she's there, from 11pm til 2, giving them the 'real' information about what's going on. Encouraging them to stand up for their student rights. By day, she's Chelsea Kotter, History major, but by night, she's "Owl Eyes", DJ of her own pirate radio broadcast. And it's quite popular.

I'm really happy with this one! It's not great by any means; I can see the glaring mistakes all over it~ But I actually got something done in a timely fashion, and I didn't spend a week agonizing over it! Yes~ I do that~ EVERY time~ Until now~ ^^ I love her! I drew this for Shiraw's Challenge: Weekly Character Design on deviantART~ This weeks' theme was 'Pirates'~ I almost skipped the theme entirely because I really, really wasn't inclined to draw a pirate, and I could only think of three: sea pirates[NO. just, wasn't feeling it], sky pirates [couldn't think of anything], Butt pirates [I was down, but no], and the kind of pirate I am when I'm streaming something I know I shouldn't be >>[No to the self portrait at this time, thank you]~ Then I remembered one other type of pirate~ Specifically, I remembered Robin Williams in 'Good Morning, Vietnam', and I knew what I wanted to draw~ No references or anything, either~ ^^ I wanted to upload it last night, but I needed sleep, and knew I was going to write a paragraph or two.. then ramble on like I tend to~ ^^

This is my new OC, Chelsea Kotter, a student at Some University, USA~ Yes, she's wearing a tank over something a bit more frilly~ She does that to feel more 'in character'~

Critiques are always welcome, as always~ ^^
