Be Brave

Here's a pic that was inspired by a few happenings in EVE Online. About a week back, I joined up with a group called Brave Newbies Inc. During the interview process to join, they asked me to be a Fleet Commander, meaning that I'd be responsible for leading people in PvP. It's a group focused around new players, so they don't get an application from a three and a half year old character every day. I responded by saying that I'd like a little time to get settled in before going for the responsibility.

Well, life has a funny way of not caring about what we'd "like" to do. The very next day there are a few of us messing around near our group's home base when some hostiles show up. (We live in an area where PvP is always allowed, with minimal restrictions.) A few seconds later, I find myself leading an ad-hoc defense fleet of ten guys against a pair of battleships. For those that don't play, these things player controlled and are a few ship sizes larger than anything that typically comes through the area. Also they have as much as double the health as anything else we usually fight. So, into the fray we go. The first one, a Rokh, we chase off and keep out of the fight. The second ship, we manage to spring a trap on and kill.

Honestly, it boarders on miraculous that we killed this thing. Half of our fleet had been playing for only a few days and shouldn't be able to do any meaningful damage to this thing. Also, there were a few times where people had to ask if they were pushing buttons properly. Anyways, this resulted in a few instances where I had to tell people "Yes, shoot that thing.", "Yes, we're sure it's a bad guy.", and "No, not that thing, shoot the other thing."

All in all, it was a good fight. We killed one and chased off the other without taking any losses. The lack of losses is what really made me proud of this one, everything about this fight suggests it should have been bloody.

I'll be going to boot camp for Fleet Commander certification at some point this week. (I'm in a 5,000+ person group so they're a bit choosey about who gets to be a leader.)
