I tend to take photos of clouds when they're doing things like this; manipulating the light in strange ways. I use pictures like this as reference for nebulae. This image was probably my favorite from this summer. Deep overhanging clouds in the late evening obscuring the higher parts of the sky making it seem like the light is piercing upward and outward in a 2D photo like this.

Taken on my shitty smartphone camera. Good enough for reference though!
