This is one of the two souvenirs I bought from a local vendor in St. Maarten. I think the use of tagua nuts to make ivory-like objects could be a good replacement for hunting elements for their tusks. I'm not sure, but hopefully my guess is right.
"The tagua nut or vegetable ivory is a seed from a tropical palm tree. This seed, when ripe, becomes hard. Once carved looks like ivory. Each handmade item is a unique piece."
