COMMISSION: Sleeping Queen by Razia (critique requested)

COMMISSION: Sleeping Queen (critique requested)

Razia

This was a commission for MasterSkeksis (on DA) who requested Queen Chrysalis asleep on a giant toadstool in a kind of "sleeping dog" pose.

This was ... interesting. It was actually my idea to include a background because that's just how I imagined it. The composition is loosely based on this image: http://www.alice-in-wonderland.net/alicepic/disney-movie/caterpillar-2.jpg
But the trees are based on these: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Everfree-Forest-Trees-297081111 (so, yeah, she's supposed to be in the Everfree Forest, more or less).

Backgrounds are intimidating for me, so this was kind of outside of my comfort zone. Actually drawing it out and making the composition work was the hardest part. Also, taking a creature that is tall and gangly and trying to draw her curled up in a ball was its own challenge.

A couple FYI's:

  • That wing was actually drawn on a separate sheet of paper, then added later in Photoshop so I could easily make it translucent.
  • I could not figure out how to color the toadstool so it'd look like it was a vivid red in reality but was shown in the dark, so I went ahead and colored it vivid red, then added a layer on top that was blue/grey and set to Multiply, semi-transparent, to tone down the color and give it a bluish tint). It also helped it to fit in with the cool color scheme.
