RainRat's short scifi story by rainrat

"Hey neighbor, looks like the raccoonfolk got into your garbage again."
"Yeah, they've been scratching at the doors and looking in the window. Freaks out my mate. What are
you using to keep them away?"
"I've got some gadgets in the storage container. You know how the kids made their little club to solve
mysteries and make aliens go away? The aliens left a whole bunch of their gadgets."
The storage container was filled to the ceiling with a combination of household items and alien
gadgets.
"Sorry about the mess. Try this; the aliens left a bunch of these. 20 bucks." The gadget was the size of
a person, but weighed about as much as if it were made of balsa wood. One end was obviously a
shooting end, on the other end was a clear box. In the middle was a shoulder rest.
"How do you use it?"
"It has a touchscreen on the side, and it's solar-powered." With a tap of the touchscreen, a miniature
sun sprang to life inside the clear box, complete with solar flares and sunspots, but the clear box
darkened to keep the light manageable, and didn't even get warm. "See?"
"I don't think that's how most people define solar-pow..."
"Then you select the destructive power on the touchscreen, and then swipe toward your target."
"There's four icons; on one side, looks like an animation of alien tree exploding, on the other side,
looks like a round green alien fruit with a bite being removed. I'll just choose the tree icon, and swipe
toward that tree stump over there..." The miniature sun dimmed for a fraction of a second, and an
even smaller miniature sun came out of the business end, following the swipe trajectory, and made
short work of the stump, and left a huge crater that could have held ten stumps.
"Just be careful that when you rest it on your shoulder, that you don't let the touchscreen rub against
your cheek; you don't want to do anything inadvertently."
"Ok, so if I choose the other side, this fruit with a bite being taken out of it ... wait, why does this fruit
look like it has continents? ... it's ... a planet ... that means .... the tree is the least powerful setting ...
THIS IS A TERRIBLE WEAPON FOR HOME DEFENSE!!!"
"You've got a right to bear arms to defend your home... Alright, alright, 10 bucks."
