Monster in the Dark

Predal1en

Today something changed;
I figured it's true.
The frontal lobe placed me-
behind my own strings

'Cus I, defy, the way the game works
I'll say it again-
I'm only getting worse

The dull assumptions
that I've tasted decency.
Waiting for the embers
to lose their glow

Nerur Shadowmasks, god of monsters, deformation, chaos, paranoia, malice, disjunction, shadows, hiding, terror, fear, and the mind. During meetings called by the Hundred Gods, Shadowmasks camps out in the shadows of a hole or underneath Nybon Wildminded's throne. In close proximity, Shadowmasks brings out the fear in any creature, no matter the type, which is why the other gods have made him stay near the already crazy god of insanity during meetings. However, Nerur is not excluded from his own aura of fear. None of the gods know what it is he's scared of, being the personification of other creatures' fears, but Nerur fears two things. The first, his own appearance, which is why he and his followers avoid seeing their reflection in any surface, even water. The second, silence in the darkness. Nerur fears what he controls because being left alone with nobody but himself and his mind terrifies even him, though none have ever noticed through his mask of pure insanity.
Shadowmasks is the monster that goes bump in the night. When the lights go out, Shadowmasks makes his home in the shadows. When a skittish creature sees something moving in the dark, Shadowmasks' is the first name they call. When a child is born with any oddities, families say Nerur's name for the monstrosity.
Very few folk of Alkelien worship Shadowmasks, and those who do are often insane. They hide in the shadows and use their spells to create motes of light. When all is said and done, his worshippers end up pale as the moonlight. There are no temples dedicated to Nerur, only cults.
