Oy, this is a new character I've been working on!
Kalira is a carpenter bee (Xylocopa valga). Daughter of a powerful slave owner, she had access to a few of the very expensive sandbeasts, which she would (unauthorizedly) dismantle and study: their inner mechanisms always seemed way more fascinating than the riches brought by the beasts.
After a lot of experimenting and some happy accidents, she managed to craft a miniature pangolin-shaped sandbeast which, unlike the larger beasts of burden, moves by its own will.
Fed up with living in her father's domains, surrounded by slavery and material pursuit, Kalira decided to travel the land and research more about the unique and specific methods that power the beasts and enable them to move.
Only she can communicate with her "doll", and touching is necessary to "hear" it.
