When Carlos first found Izi he never saw her as another person but rather just as a small critter he could manipulate into doing things for him.
He was going to dispose of her (eat her) once she was no longer useful to him, but as it happened he ended up getting attached to the tiny fairy, and likewise she with him.
Now she's his best friend and if anyone lays a finger on her they got him to answer to.
These two have more in common than meets the eye and they can relate to one another in that they both lost a parent, were both outcast by their own people and were both set up for crimes they didn't do.
They also have similar habits but that's got more to do with Izi learning said habits from Carlos.

Obviously Carlos isn't in any way a giant, but given that Izi's so tiny it may seem to her like he is.
