Radium was the first element used for its radioactivity – as early as the 1900s, it went into self-lighting clocks and watches, like the one Rarity is wearing here, as well as in quack medicines (the harmful effects of radioactivity were not widely known at that time). Radium has been replaced with less dangerous tritium in the former application, however.
