Species info!

*Desert Butterfly Tail Species (A.K.A Desert tail):

Environment:

  • Warm/extremely hot places

*Mating Season:

April and November; Lasts about three weeks each.

Mating rituals:

When it comes to the mating season both genders of the species do their best to impress. Desert butter fly tails dance, jump, and bark while either raising up their butterfly tails in the air or flapping them up and down like butterfly wings to catch the attention of a potential mate. If the other is interested then they will join their suitor in a beautiful mirroring dance, where both pairs must match the others' steps. Usually the suitor or the more dominate one leads but either pair can lead the dance or they both can take turns. The longer the dance goes without being interrupted by other opponents the greater the chance of both partners becoming a mating pair.

As with every mating season there is always a risk of an opponent trying to steal someone's mate. If a male is trying to do the stealing, then the males will display their large incisors and tails high up in the air in an attempt to intimidate the other into backing down. If that doesn't work then they will march at each other at full speed with fangs ready to fight for the right to mate. If it's a female, then the female with a mate will display her butterfly tails twice before giving chase and fighting off the opposing female. However, it is rare for fights to break out because usually the smaller or weaker opponent backs down quickly to avoid injury.

*Anatomy:

  • Body: Its small, thin, and light weight body helps it travel quickly and lightly over landscapes and makes them more successful in stalking prey.
  • Ears: Large ears help the desert butterfly tail regulate body temperature depending on their environment's current temperature. The large ears also give desert tails excellent hearing; they can hear prey roaming about a mile away.
  • Size: Roughly about the same size as a grey fox
  • Tail: The Butterfly tails are used for display to attract mates during mating season and to make themselves seem much larger and intimidating when they feel threatened. The longer larger tail is used to give the desert butterfly tail better balance will running or climbing.
  • Incisors: The fangs are used to keep a deeper and better grip on their prey. They are also used for display to size competition up during mating season and while defending their territory.
  • Eyes: Desert tails have excellent sight both during the day and at night.
  • Fur colors: Fur colors are typically dark to help them blend in to their surrounding but light furred desert tails can accrue.
  • Fur type: Short and slightly rough

*Family life:

Desert tail families are made up of two parents and their litter of kits. The parents will mate for life and will continue to try to raise kits together even when they have a failed season (either they had no litter that season or no kits made it to sexual maturity/adulthood; in other words the kits all died). Parents with litters will take turns in hunting and scavenging for food to bring back to the den.

Desert tail parents are very protective of their kits and will defend them to the death against other predators. Kits stay near the den until they are about 12 weeks old. About 13 to 14 weeks they are taken out on hunting trips to learn how to hunt, scavenge, and protect their territories. Kits reach sexually maturity when they are about 7 months old but they won't be considered adults until they are a year old.

*Population:

-Stable and very large

*Snow Batafurai Species:

Environment:

  • Cold/extremely cold places

*Mating Season:

February and July; Lasts about two weeks each.

Mating rituals:

When it comes to the mating season only the males take part in showing off for the opposite gender. Snow Batafurai rituals are similar to that of the desert butterfly tail. They dance, jump, and bark while either raising up their butterfly tails in the air or flapping them up and down like butterfly wings to catch the attention of a potential mate. If the other is interested then they will join their suitor in a beautiful dance, where both pairs must dance around in circles while matching their partner's movements. The female takes the lead in the dance while they male tries his best to follow closely behind her and match her every move. The dance usually ends when the female and male lock their long tails together making them slightly twist around each other.

As with every mating season there is always a risk of an opponent trying to steal someone's mate. If a male challenges another for a mate then the males will display their tails high up in the air in and growl in an attempt to intimidate the other before charging towards each other in a game of chicken. If no male gives way then they will fight until either male gives in often resulting in serious injuries. Unlike the desert butterfly tail, it is common for snow batafurai to fight during mating season because of the tough competition for few females.

*Anatomy:

  • Body: Its small, thin, and light weight body helps it travel quickly and lightly over the snow and ice; making them more successful in stalking prey.
  • Ears: Large ears help regulate their body temperature depending on their environment's current temperature. The large ears also gives snow batafurai excellent hearing; they can hear prey roaming about a mile away.
  • Size: Roughly about the same size as a grey fox
  • Tail: The tails are used for display to attract mates during mating season and to make themselves seem much larger and intimidating when they feel threatened. The longer larger tail is used to give the snow batafurai better balance while running, walking over ice, and climbing. -Incisors: The fangs are used to keep a deeper and better grip on their prey. They are also used for display to size competition up during mating season or to defend their territory.
  • Eyes: Snow batafurai have excellent sight during the day but have poor eye sight during the night due to limited natural lighting.
  • Fur colors: Fur colors are usually light or pale with a bit of dark fur to help them blend in to their surrounding but fully dark furred snow batafurai can accrue. -Fur type: Long, fluffy, and soft

*Family life:

Snow batafurai families are made up of two parents and their litter of kits. The parents will mate and stay together until the kits are about 12 weeks old. After that the male will leave in search of unclaimed territory and females in heat. The mother stays with her kits until they are about a year old which is also around the time when female kits become sexually mature and are considered adults. Male kits, however, don't become sexually mature or become adults until they are about two years old but their mothers still leave them or kick them out to fed for themselves. In the cases of mothers with all male litters, they will stay with their kits until they become sexually mature adults. Once the kits are old enough to leave their mothers, they will venture off in search of unclaimed land and mates.

*Population:

-Unstable, low in numbers, and is steadily declining.
