The hunters and poachers near Palus still warn travelers of the swamps near the city, not to linger near the water for too long, lest the Kelpie drags you into the water to drown you.

But it’s been ages since anyone has seen a Kelpie… some say they have gone extinct.

But Rowan knows better, he has seen her before, the lonely mare, she lives deep in the swamp, and she could tell you a thing or two about why she’s the last one, if you could understand her of course. Kelpies aren’t the monsters the hunters tell you, they are water spirits, drawn to the wet swamps just south of Palus, they don’t eat harpies or centaurs, they eat lilies and algae. They just want to be left alone.

Unfortunately, the flowers that grow on a Kelpie’s mane are extremely valuable in medicine, and for ages they were ruthlessly hunted down for their precious flowers. It’s understandable that eventually they decided to defend themselves, by attacking any and all harpies and centaurs on sight.

But it was too late, they had been hunted down to the edge of extinction… with a single lonely mare still living.

She’s careful of course, and spends all her time underwater, as not to attract any attention. Her name is Sìne, and she misses the calls of the other Kelpies… the swamps are much quieter now.
