While out sailing, Kitik came across the trio in distress. For whatever reason, they had fallen in the ocean, and as the squirrels are a tree-oriented people, they don't typically know how to swim. Our gallant captain rescued them without hesitation, and they pledged a life debt to her. At least, that's what everyone assumes, based on their behavior; The trio don't speak any language known to the group. However, they seem eager to help around the ship, and take well to simple tasks once shown how to do them.

Unfortunately, they're also a bunch of troublemakers...
