I've been thinking about Max's predicament during WWII. Aside from the fact that food would be scarce all around due to wartime rationing, the family sheltering Max, the Hazemanns, are hares, meaning that they are strictly vegetarian. Martens like Max, on the other hand, are obligate carnivores and cannot survive on plants. Grains and vegetables would be cheaper and easier to come by than meat and eggs during the war - not to mention that hares buying meat and eggs would certainly arouse suspicion - so poor Max has to make due with a diet he can barely digest.
