Roderick, son of Frederick the cooper, has grown used to his life as a cooper himself, happy with his simple, small-town ways. But his father has bigger plans for him, and when a roving knight passes through town, he sells Roderick's next six years of service to him as a squire, without consulting Roderick first. Here, Roderick has just learned the news, and is heartbroken.
