The cause of this transformation was... errrr... uuuh... a chemical waste altered the microfauna's DNA around the zone, providing it with quantum control over diferent planes of the reality, which caused a huge fluctuation in the radiation emitted by the Sun, so an alien civilization came to investigate the phenomenon using a forbidden kind of magic to propel their ship and unleashing this way the fury of archane gods given to transform people into starfishes, but only in zones where the microfauna possesses an altered DNA. :P
