Pokémon concept: Nursine (Kumagoshi) by Luprand

Pokémon concept: Nursine (Kumagoshi)

Luprand

An idea for a Pokémon native to a Utah-based region. Nursine is the regional Chansey-equivalent, kind and caring but also stern and no-nonsense. Interrupt a Nursine while it is caring for a patient, and you can expect to be swiftly subdued by a variety of status ailment techniques. (Its moveset focuses mainly on healing and status ailments, with some light attacks; it can be very useful on a "catching" team.)

Nursine is all about cleanliness: the fur on its muzzle grows thick and long to filter the air it breathes and the liquid it drinks. Its saliva is a powerful antiseptic and anaesthetic, quickly cleaning wounds and soothing the lingering pain. It often licks its paws clean, and usually moves bipedally to keep them off the ground. If it must drop to all fours to sprint, it still runs on its knuckles to keep them as clean as possible. In the aftermath of accidents and disasters, Nursine can often be found working themselves to exhaustion; their trainers must be careful and ensure they get enough rest.

The color schemes are based on various color phases of the American black bear: the female's brown pelage comes from the cinnamon bear, the shiny male's steel blue is based on the glacier bear, and the shiny female's pale blonde is based on the Kermode "spirit" bear. The pink "scrubs" pattern on the shiny female makes a nice reference to Chansey and Audino, I think.

(Poison/Steel might seem like a strange type combination for a healer Pokémon, but some toxic substances can be therapeutic at very low doses - not to mention chemical sanitizers. Certain metals also have antimicrobial properties, although I'd still recommend using sanitizer or an autoclave.)

I love this creature! Where does the name "Kumagoshi" come from?

      Glad you like it!

Kumagoshi is a portmanteau of kuma (熊, bear) and kangoshi (看護師, nurse).

OH, fitting! And I'm happy to see other Fakemon artists create Japanese names for their creations! ♪
